Boy Scouts Honored by Connecticut State Representative for SFG Efforts
Boy Scout Troop 88 of Fairfield, CT
April 25th was an Earth Day Celebration for many, including these dedicated Boy Scouts and adults. "Make Every Day Earth Day" is truly something these boys bring to the attention of their friends, families and neighbors by their actions, pictured here holding a Certificate of Appreciation from Mel Bartholomew, the Creator and Founder of Square Foot Gardening. Recognizing these youth are CT State Senator Tony Hwang and CT State Representative Brenda Kupchick. Also, pictured is Scoutmaster Bill Hall, and SFG Certified Instructor, "The Square Foot Gardening Health Coach", Amie Guyette Hall.
BSA Troop 88 of Fairfield Grace Methodist Church, Fairfield, CT is now in their 6th year of helping others in and around their town to get growing using the Square Foot Gardening Method. With adult leadership, the boys work together to measure & mark, drill, count, cut and assemble 4x4 SFG kits. Then step out in their community to practice their salesmanship voices and to teach "all ages and abilities" how to Square Foot Garden. The boys offer a DIY kit where the homeowner can easily assemble the pre-drilled boards, and a Scout Installed kit where several of the youth deliver and assemble on site providing an educational hands on lesson teaching The Ten Basics. This service project is a fundraiser for their activities program. The troop has also gifted garden boxes to other groups such as The Fairfield Woods Branch Library, The Pequot Library, The Pilot House and several other locations. BSA Troop 88 is known as "The Eagle Makers" is going strong with 68 youth currently active and focused on their personal rank advancement. This project is just one of many examples of how the scouting program builds character, and fosters life and leadership skills.
